East Keith Road Transportation Improvements
Update: At its public workshop on June 25, 2012, District of North Vancouver Council indicated its preference for retaining the existing lane configuration.
The re-paving of East Keith Road in Fall 2011 provided an opportunity to consider laning changes (between Sutherland Avenue and Brooksbank Avenue) to address transportation issues. Both the District and the City are stakeholders (the south side of Keith Road is City land).
In June 2011, an open house and survey was conducted to present conceptual road re-laning options. The options took into consideration the needs of cyclists, buses, and general traffic. Subsequent to the public process, a new lane configuration was designed and laid out on the road. The new laning allows vehicles travelling west or east to overtake stationary buses and pass vehicles waiting to make a left turn.
Due to some concerns raised by the public about the new lane configuration, the District determined that further analysis of traffic impacts and more public engagement is needed before finalizing the laning. The original laning was reinstated with temporary road markings in October 2011, with the goal of selecting a final configuration in Spring 2012.
An online survey was conducted between November 2011 and May 2012.
A second open house was hosted by the District of North Vancouver on April 25th, 2012 to present survey and traffic analysis results.
A transportation engineering firm was engaged to:
•Quantify expected vehicle, transit, cycling and pedestrian safety performance of both options;
•Quantify vehicle capacity performance of the corridor, with and without expected closures of the City’s Low Level Road during re-construction;
•Compare any other factors that may affect decision, including public comments; and
•Make other recommendations to improve capacity and safety.
