Speak at a council meeting

Regular Council meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month. We provide a 30-minute public input period at the beginning of regular Council meetings, during which you can speak to Council on any item of interest for three minutes.

Comments on some Council agenda items may be restricted by legal requirements as indicated on the agenda.

To speak during the public input portion of the meeting

  1. Come to the meeting and add your name to the public comment log. Sign up begins 30 minutes before the meeting starts.
  2. Go to the speakers table when the presiding member of the meeting calls your name.
  3. Introduce yourself to Council, giving them both your name and address.
  4. Speak for three minutes (the presiding member will let you know when your time is up).

To speak when the item is before Council for consideration

  1. Come to the meeting and add your name to the public comment log.  Sign up begins 30 minutes before the meeting starts.
  2. Ask to be scheduled to speak when the item is to be discussed. The number of speakers is limited to one in favour and one opposed at each item.
  3. Go to the speakers table when the presiding member of the meeting calls your name.
  4. Introduce yourself to Council, giving them both your name and address.
  5. Speak for three minutes (the presiding member will let you know when your time is up).

All comments are directed to the presiding member of the meeting. The Mayor may be referred to as "Your Worship" or Mayor Walton; other Council members as “Councillors” and a presiding member other than the Mayor as "Madam Chairperson" or "Mr. Chairperson."

Council agendas are posted on the Thursday afternoon before the next Council meeting.

Providing written material before you speak to Council

If you want Council to receive written material in advance of the Monday meeting where you plan to speak, we can circulate the material to Council if we receive it by Tuesday noon of the week prior.

If you are having trouble making this deadline, please discuss it with the Clerk's Office staff. They will do what they can to help.

Providing your comments to Council in writing

If you would like to share your thoughts in writing — rather than speak at a meeting — you can write to Mayor and Council. Your letter will be circulated to them and, if appropriate, its contents will be acted upon by staff.

Email: council@dnv.org

Do you need to clarify a Council decision?

You can call or email the Clerk's Office during office hours for assistance or clarification, or you may raise your hand at the meeting and the decision can be repeated by the Clerk.
