Where to take items you can't dispose of at the curb

Not all of your waste can be included in your regular curbside collection. Here is a list of items we do not accept:

  • oversized items (furniture, for example)
  • construction material
  • dirt, rocks, sod
  • small appliances
  • used oil, antifreeze
  • paint, pesticides
  • explosives
  • electronics, batteries
  • tires
  • medications

Look up an item to learn how to dispose of it

Fortunately, there are still plenty of ways you can safely and responsibly recycle or dispose of items you can't put at the curb. Use our Waste Wizard to look up any item, and get specific instruction for what to do with it.

Living safely with wildlife

The District is home to a variety of wild animals, including skunks, raccoons, coyotes, cougars, and bears.

Whether they're searching for food, or looking for a warm place to call home, there are steps you can take to make your property less inviting to them.
