DNV testing innovative drone survey technology

On Tuesday, August 23, the District’s construction team will fly a drone above Mountain Highway from Arborlynn Drive to 27th Street.

They are testing an innovative approach to surveying by using a drone that uses LiDAR imaging – a form of 3D laser scanning – to map the land and objects below.

LiDAR can penetrate vegetation and tree canopies, which is particularly helpful in forested places like the District.

The result is three-dimensional information that can be used for surveying, project planning, engineering and design, and construction work.

The information collected by the survey drone will be specifically of District property and will be used to support upcoming projects in the area.

Tuesday’s drone flight will start around 10am and continue intermittently until 4pm.
