Funding for new affordable housing secured for District

BC Housing has announced that the proposal for an 86-unit, four-storey affordable rental building at 600 West Queens in the District of North Vancouver has been approved to receive a grant from its Community Housing Fund.

The project, which will be operated by Hollyburn Family Services Society, is located on the District-owned site of the old Delbrook Community Centre parking lot on the corner of West Queens Road and Stanley Avenue.

The funding means that Hollyburn Family Services Society can now move the project forward with its development permit application. Rezoning for the site was approved in November 2019, and the partnership agreement between the District and Hollyburn Family Services Society was announced in November 2020.

“We are very pleased with the funding announcement from the Province today, which will help propel this important project one step closer to completion and one step closer toward our goal to deliver much-needed affordable rental housing for middle and low-income families and individuals in our community,” said District Mayor Mike Little.

“Hollyburn works with individuals and families impacted by the severe shortage of affordable rental housing on the North Shore,” said Alan Kwinter, Board Chair. “We see daily the toll of housing instability on people’s physical and mental well-being and their capacity to fully contribute to their community. Today’s announcement is a much-needed step forward and we are pleased to be able to work with the District of North Vancouver on the development of this important project.”

The site of the old Delbrook Community Centre, located at 600 West Queens Road in North Vancouver, has been the subject of three years of community consultation. The south portion of the site has been rezoned for residential use and the north portion of the site has been rezoned as a neighbourhood park, which is currently in the detailed design phase. Funding for the neighbourhood park is included in the District’s five-year capital plan.
