Student Vote program teaches why voting matters

Students at participating North Vancouver schools will be able to cast a ballot in a mock municipal election in October.

The District is once again collaborating with CIVIX, a non-partisan group promoting civic engagement, to offer the Student Vote program.

Elementary and secondary schools that sign up receive free learning resources and election supplies. After learning about the election, students cast ballots for the local candidates running in their municipality or electoral district, and the results are later posted after the polls close.

The Student Vote program is designed to spark conversation about community issues, give students a better understanding of the election process and encourage them to research candidates.

The mock election for students coincides with the General Local Election in British Columbia, which takes place on October 15.

Student Vote is open to any school, and the resources are intended for grades 4 to 12.
