Urban Tree Canopy Project continues to grow

Here we grow again. On October 21 and 22, District staff and volunteers handed out nearly 1,000 trees and shrubs to residents who participated in the third annual Urban Tree Canopy Project.

The District’s environmental team introduced the program in 2021 to encourage residents to plant more trees in their yards and it’s been growing ever since.

Expanding the urban forest canopy provides many environmental and health benefits.

This year’s tree and shrub pickup event at the Wild Bird Trust of BC/Coast Salish Plant Nursery included a welcoming ceremony and storytelling by səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation member Les George, guided bird and nature walks and propagation and planting demonstrations.

To date, DNV residents have received nearly 2,000 trees and shrubs.
