Honouring Red Dress Day

Today, we honour Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S).

In Canada, Indigenous women and girls are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population, and this violence tends to result in more serious harm, according to the Assembly of First Nations.

The District introduced a resolution at the 2022 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention to support the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and advance reconciliation efforts in local government. The resolution was endorsed by UBCM and amended to reflect the calls to action related to municipal government.
