Development Permit Areas (DPA)

Development Permit Areas (DPAs) are areas where special requirements and guidelines for any development or alteration of the land are in effect.

  • Five Environmental Protection and Natural Hazard DPAs, which protect the environment or protect development in hazardous areas
  • Two planning DPAs, which guide the form and character and support energy and water conservation, and greenhouse gas reduction, primarily for multi-family residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments.

If your property is included within one or more of the DPAs, discuss your proposed work with District staff early in the process. Staff will be able to advise you about whether or not your proposed work is exempt from the DPA requirements, or if you require further assessments by a qualified professional.
