Most work you do with a permit requires an inspection. It is the responsibility of the homeowner or contractor to arrange for all inspections at the right time.

Safety rules to observe before booking your inspection

To protect the health of our inspectors and members of the public, please observe these rules:

  • Premises to be inspected has to be unoccupied
  • One representative must be on site who can provide entry to the premises, and witness the inspection
  • Appropriate social distancing etiquette must be observed throughout the visit
  • You must reschedule the inspection if your representative shows any signs of illness

We reserve the right to cancel the inspection if the inspector considers that these requirements have not been met.

Requesting your inspection online

You can request your building and mechanical inspections on this page (with the exception of electrical and tree replanting inspections). Just complete the form on this page, and a staff member will contact you to confirm your inspection date.

If you submit your request by 2:30pm Monday-Friday (excluding statutory holidays), you can schedule your inspection for the next business day.

Inspections during the holiday — There will be no inspections scheduled on Friday, March 29 or Monday, April 1, 2024. If you submit a request for an inspection during this period, it will be scheduled for April 3, 2024, or later.

Here's how to request your electrical inspection:

Tree replanting inspections

Before booking a tree replanting inspection, make sure you complete all the requirements your tree permit indicates. 

Private property

You don't need an in-person inspection if you can email these documents with your request to environment@dnv.org:

  • Photographs of the replanted tree(s)
  • A site plan drawing showing where the trees are placed on your property

If you don’t have these documents available, email us to arrange an in-person inspection.

District property

To book a tree replanting inspection on District property, email trees@dnv.org with your request.

You must book a Final Inspection first.

Requirements for this inspection

  • the boulevard should be restored to original condition and/ or as per instruction set during the permitting process - see accepted drawing site plan
  • request the Boulevard Restoration Review when the landscaping of your site is complete
  • the homeowner or contact does not need to attend this inspection

 

Before you request your frame inspection, you must:  1. Complete an Erosion and Sediment Control inspection (ESC), 2. Ensure that all rough-in inspections are completed for your subtrade permits, and 3. Download and complete these ventilation checklists: ​Forced air systems, HRV systems, Distributed CRV systems, Exhaust fan and passive inlets

We will not be able to book your inspection unless these are all complete.


Requirements for this inspection

  • exposed soil must be covered (poly, mulch, straw etc.)
  • off-site catch basins adjacent to the work site must be protected with an appropriate catch basin protection device
  • water must be maintained onsite (clean, clear water can be discharged offsite to the storm water system as long as it is safe to do so)
  • a clean access pad must be maintained for all site access requirements
  • all required tree protection fencing must be in good order and nothing can be stored within the tree protection fence

 

Before you request your final building inspection, please ensure that all subtrade permits are finalized: drainage, electrical, fire sprinkler, gas, heating, and plumbing. We will not book your final inspection until all subtrade permits are finished. 

You must book an Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) inspection first.

Your inspection will be scheduled for the next available day. You are not required to be on site for the inspection.

Normally, your inspection is scheduled for the next business day if we receive your request before 2:30pm Monday to Friday (except stat holidays). However, we may need to schedule your inspection for a later date, if the time you request is in high demand. We will email you to confirm the scheduled date of your inspection.
