The Advisory Design Panel annually presents awards to encourage excellence in design and to recognize projects that significantly contribute to the built environment of the District of North Vancouver.

2022 award recipients 

Design Award of Excellence: Park West

  • Developer — Keltic Development Ltd
  • Architect — Rafii Architects Inc
  • Landscape architect —  PFS Studio

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • site plan and location of the massing to protect views and accommodate new pedestrian and vehicle connections
  • excellent pedestrian spaces around the transit stop, plaza, and one-way road
  • various architectural details that give a relatively large development a more refined sense of scale

Design Award of Excellence: Belle Isle

  • Developer — Citimark Belle Isle Project Ltd
  • Architect — Integra Architecture Inc
  • Landscape architect —  ETA Landscape Architecture

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • successfully designed interface for the new Belle Isle Park
  • well-appointed open amenity space at the centre of the townhomes
  • many pathways through the site that are coordinated with surrounding developments to ensure that all residents are able to access everything this up-and-coming village centre has to offer

Design Award of Excellence: Handsworth Secondary School

  • Developer — School District 44
  • Architect — KMBR Architects & Planners Inc
  • Landscape architect —  Van der Zalm + Associates Inc

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • accommodation of all the programming needs of a school in an efficient and understated building
  • ample amount of covered, outdoor, unstructured spaces along the south façade
  • incorporation of indigenous design language throughout the interiors and exteriors of the development

Design Award of Excellence: Hunter at Lynn Creek

  • Developer — Intergulf Development (Hunter) Group
  • Architect —  RWA Group Architecture Ltd
  • Landscape architect —  PMG Landscape Architects Ltd

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • cohesive use of materials that tie together the residential components of the development
  • generous use of glazing to articulate the facades of the commuting centre and take advantage of views
  • overall massing strategy that not only reflects the point towers across the street, but also the midrise buildings along Mountain Highway

Design Award of Merit: Kiwanis Lynn Woods

  • Developer — Kiwanis North Shore Housing Society
  • Architect — Raymond Letkeman Architect Inc
  • Landscape architect —  ETA Landscape Architecture

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • site planning that allowed the building to be well situated between the existing trees and a new open courtyard
  • overall material selection that echoes the design language of the recently renovated tower
  • thoughtful location of accessibility features that is important to existing and new residents

2021 award recipients 

Design Award of Excellence: The Lloyd at 1616 Lloyd Avenue

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • use of glass, windows, and overall material selection
  • strong presence and generous features such as patios
  • successfully capturing the mountain theme

Design Award of Excellence: Brooklynn at 467 Mountain Highway

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • creating clean corners which provide a focal point at this intersection
  • the amount of windows and material selection
  • overall feel and continuity of the design which is evident at street level

Design Award of Excellence: Mason at 2070 Curling Road

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • architectural style and use of brownstone to create an attractive streetscape
  • well thought-out and executed detailing, materials used, light, and landscaping

Design Award of Excellence: Holland Row Townhomes 

A row townhome development at 1960 Glenaire Dr.

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • achieving a balance of both density and livability while respecting the riparian setback to the Capilano River along its northern edge
  • high quality of materials and finishes 
  • colour pallette that also related to the surrounding environment

Design Award of Excellence: The Residences at Lynn Valley 

A mixed-use development at 1208 E 27th St.

Public art — Dam de Nogales

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • consistent design language across such a large project that helps achieve a cohesive village-like character
  • choice of materials and colours, especially the warmth created by the timber and stone
  • dramatic improvement to the public realm along with the addition of public art is both visually compelling and playful

Design Award of Excellence: 3730 Edgemont Boulevard

Designed by Harbourview Projects, Office of McFarlane Bigger, and Forma Design Inc. 

In particular, the panel commends the design team on its:

  • modern response to architectural heritage within the neighbourhood
  • site planning that maximizes outdoor spaces
  • overall material selection and workmanship
